Notes on Performance: The impossibility of recreating or accurately representing a performance is both the benefit and dilemma of this medium. Neither photograph, word combination nor video recording has the power to recollect the essential quality of performance, which is presence. In performance, as in painting, spontaneous response to situation becomes the most accurate representative of complex internal processes. Art used to embody a particular theory or to fulfill a particular goal not only fails, it also misses the point. Art is unique in its ability to reveal that which we sense but do not yet know (Hegel's Phenomenology). It visualizes / vocalizes that which is hidden.
